AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT up to 23% Faster than the NVIDIA RTX 4070 and $100 Cheaper (in Official Benchmarks)

Ahead of the Navi 32 launch, the first-party benchmarks of the Radeon RX 7700 XT and 7800 XT have leaked out. The data, which includes 1440p raster and ray-tracing benchmarks, comes from HD Tecnologia. We’ve got 17 rasterized gaming numbers and 9 ray-traced performance figures for the Radeon RX 7700 XT and 7800 XT, with direct comparisons to the RTX 4060 Ti and 4070. Before proceeding, remember that the RX 7700 XT will cost $449, and the 7800 XT will be priced at $499.

The midrange RDNA 3 cards perform admirably in the rasterization tests. The RX 7700 XT is up to 31% faster than the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB, beating it by at least 9% in all but one title. In most scenarios, the RX 7800 XT is faster than the RTX 4070, but not by much. We’re looking at an average 4% to 8% lead at 1440p Ultra, with minor deficits in a few titles.

Considering that the Radeon RX 7800 XT will cost $499 ($100 less than the RTX 4070), this is a killer midrange value. The RX 7700 XT costs $50 more than the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB and $50 less than its 16GB variant. And yet, it’s notably faster than both, as indicated by the above chart.

And now, we’ll have a look at the ray-tracing numbers. As is the norm, NVIDIA’s RTX cards are the dominant force here, beating the Navi 32-based Radeons quite decisively in all but a few AMD partner titles that feature scant implementations of RT. Notable mentions include Dead Space and Resident Evil 4, where the RX 7700 XT is 19% and 21% faster than the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB. Cyberpunk 2077 also favors the Radeon with the “low” RT preset.

With ray-tracing enabled, the RX 7800 XT is only 8% and 6% faster than the RTX 4070 in RE4 and Dead Space, respectively. The latter is 19% faster in Cyberpunk 2077 (RT Ultra) while holding a lead of 9% in the AMD-sponsored “The Callisto Protocol”.

All said and done, the Navi 32 SKUs offer excellent value, delivering better performance than their GeForce RTX rivals at lower price points. Of course, these are just the first-party numbers, so expect a reality check when the embargo lifts tomorrow.
